January 29, 2013 @ 5:30 pm - 6:30 pm

Ann Halbert-Brooks is a PhD student in the Department of History and an Americas Graduate Fellow at the Institute for the Study of the Americas. Her research focuses on the ways in which women’s labor was solicited by the Cuban Government during the literacy campaign. The Literacy Campaign of 1961 was an attempt by the new Cuban government to raise nationwide literacy rates in the space of one year. Over 200,000 adults, many of them women, successfully mobilized to teach more than one million Cubans to read and write.
