Torres Cuevas diverse research interests include religion in Cuba, the institutional history of the Catholic Church, the evolution of Masonry in Cuba, slavery, and the study of historical figures such as Antonio Maceo, José Martí, and Fernando Ortiz. Torres Cuevas has earned numerous distinctions in Cuba and abroad. He is a member of the Unión Nacional de Historiadores de Cuba, the Unión Nacional de Escritores y Artistas de Cuba, the Asociación de Historiadores Latinoamericanos y del Caribe, and the New York Academy of Sciences. He is current president of the Cuban Academy of History and Director of the National Library of Cuba.
