Major Lectures/ Talks
Landscapes of Globalization: The Latin American Experience, January 26, 6:00pm, Nelson Mandela Auditorium, FedEx Global Education Center
"Are we changing? Globalization, new integration strategies and old ideologies in Latin America", a talk by Eduardo Gudynas, founder and director of the Centro de Ecología Social, CLAES, in Montevideo. CLAES is probably the most visible and influential environmental NGO in South America, and Gudynas is one of the top ecologists in Latin America and the Caribbean. He is the author of many books and articles on sustainable development, regional integration, environmental problems, and agricultural development in Latin America. His book, "Ecología, economía y ética del desarrollo sostenible en América Latina" has seen five editions in five different countries. In his most current research, he examines the consolidation of a new agribusiness model, best exemplified perhaps by the expansion of soy in countries like Argentina, Uruguay, Bolivia, and Brazil. Gudynas will bring to the campus both first-hand knowledge of some of the most pressing problems in the continent and Latin American perspectives on these issues.
