CUATRO MUJERES, CUATRO AUTORES

(Four Women, Four Authors)

14 minutes

Directed by: Luis Felipe Bernanza

Overview:

Pablo Milanés and Silvio Rodríguez, two well-known representatives of the Latin American nueva trova (“new song movement”), interpret songs about women written by themselves or other Cuban composers (including Sindo Garay, author of “Perla Marina” and Manuel Corona, author of “Santa Cecilia”).  The songs are named after four women who personify Cuba, the revolution, Latin culture, and the Muses.

Strengths and Weaknesses:

With beautiful music and a great rendering by two of Cuba’s most renowned artists, this short music video deserves to be seen at least once by everyone.  The imagery an the last song is superb. The poetry is an example of the magnificent work of Silvio Rodríguez.

The filler video (some cards moving about the frame) seems unrelated and does not add much to the musical performances.

Introducing the Tape:

Some introduction to the nueva trova in Latin America would be helpful.
