Conference Travel (Domestic & International)
The Institute for the Study of the Americas offers a limited number of awards to defray the cost travel of UNC-Chapel Hill Latin Americanist faculty who are presenting papers at domestic and international conferences.
Priorities:
- Junior faculty
- Faculty who have not recently received funds for these sources
- Requests that clearly demonstrate the need and relevance of the activity to the candidate's field and/or curricular objectives
International Travel: International travel may require approval by the U.S. Department of Education prior to travel. We will need date of departure, city and country of departure, date of arrival, city and country of arrival, air carrier(s) and flight numbers. We need detailed travel information about all legs of your trip (including connecting flights and cities) in order to request approval from the U.S. Department of Education. All travel funded by the U.S. Department of Education must comply with the Fly America Act. If you are flying on an airline that has partnership arrangements with a foreign carrier, please make sure that your ticket is booked on the U.S. carrier and that the flight number listed is the U.S. carrier number.
Deadline: On-going throughout the academic year while funds are available. Applications are due at least two months before the intended date of travel. Applications should be submitted via email with subject "Faculty Conference Travel" to Shelley Clarke at sclarke@email.unc.edu

- A current curriculum vitae
- A statement detailing previous ISA-funded support, including publications of papers, films or other products that resulted.
- A budget with justification for the expenses
- A statement about alternate funding sources available for this project
Research (Domestic & International)
The Institute for the Study of the Americas offers a limited number of awards to defray the cost travel of UNC-CH Latin Americanist faculty who are conducting research in Latin America or need to consult libraries or archives in the United States as part of their research endeavors. Typically domestic awards range from $300-500 and international awards range from $500-1200 each.

- Requests that clearly demonstrate the need and relevance of the activity to the candidate's field and/or curricular objectives

Reporting: A narrative report including project title, destination, and duration of field research activities conducted with travel award monies, amount of the award, and a brief narrative describing your research activities is required. The report is due 30 days after your return. If articles, books, films, or presentations result from this research we would appreciate a listing of these activities. We may contact you after your report is submitted for an update.

Acknowledgement of Support: Funding for these awards is provided by the Mellon Foundation and the U.S. Department of Education. Awardees are required to properly acknowledge support as indicated in the award letter.
Speaker Funds
The Institute for the Study of the Americas offers modest funds (up to $200 per event) to bring Latin Americanist speakers and presenters to campus. We are especially interested in supporting innovative ideas and creative events to enhance knowledge of Latin America at Carolina.
Please send a brief proposal with the name of the speaker, biographical sketch or CV, description of the proposed activity, total budget, and list of alternate funding sources and/or co-sponsors to Shelley Clarke at sclarke@email.unc.edu at least 30 days prior to the event date.
Acknowledgement of Support: Awardees are required to properly acknowledge support from the Institute for the Study of the Americas or as indicated in the award letter.
