Project Guanajuato

Project Guanajuato (formerly known as Project El Gusano) is a summer community development experience for UNC undergraduates. The program was started in 2007 by undergraduates who participated in the APPLES Global Course INTS 390, Global Course Guanajuato. This project, now in its third year, is a collaborative effort between ISA's Latino Migration Project and the Mexican NGO Fundación Comunitaria del Bajio http://www.fcbajio.org. The UNC chapter of Nourish International also provides support for the project. Each summer, a team of undergraduates spends between 4 and 6 weeks working in rural communities in the state of Guanajuato, Mexico to assist the Foundation in community development projects. Students have created community centers, completed needs-assessments, taught English and recreation classes at local schools, and helped develop business plans for micro-enterprises. Students live with families. These communities experience high levels of emigration to the United States. The mission of the Fundación is to create viable economic and social opportunities to make communities places that people want to stay in http://nourishinternational.org/blog/mexico-08/.
