Latin American and Iberian Resource Collection

The Latin American and Iberian collections of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill support the broad range of research needs of Carolina’s faculty and students in these world areas. Our holdings of over 500,000 volumes are primarily held in Walter Royal Davis Library, the central library for the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The strength of the collections complements the research interests of the many graduate programs in the humanities, social sciences and the professional schools. In addition to acquiring materials in Spanish and Portuguese, our collections also include content in Galician, Basque, Catalán and Haitian Creole as well as many indigenous languages with a special emphasis in Yucatec Maya and Guaraní. LAIR also collects Latina/o Studies and Indigenous Studies material.

Based on a long-standing cooperative agreement with Duke University, UNC-Chapel Hill collects core materials from all Latin American countries, as well as research-level materials from Argentina, Brazil (humanities and literature), Chile, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Haiti, Paraguay, Puerto Rico, Uruguay and Venezuela.

Wilson Library Special Collections

The Wilson Special Collections Library include many important resources related to Latin American, Iberian and Latina/o Studies. The most notable collections include the Bernard J. Flatow Collection of Latin American Cronistas which includes original and very early editions of writings detailing the conquest and colonization of Spanish America, and the George E. and Melinda Y. Stuart Collection that comprises nearly 11,000 volumes of Maya-related materials. A notable recent addition are the Louis A. Pérez papers on Americans in Cuba, 1910-1959, 1991-1992, consists of letters chronicling the various aspects of life in 20th century Cuba. Other recent collections include the Mexican and Latino comics collections. Digital collections include the José María Vargas Vila Digital Library and the recently acquired Catherine Murphy MAESTRA Collection which consists of the digital archives of her 2012 documentary film on the 1961 Cuban literacy campaign.

The pandemic experience of COVID-19 in Latin America reaches us mostly in the form of aggregate numbers and summary overviews, often in random intervals and almost always from a distance. The Testimonios collection is designed to offer access to voices from Latin America as a chronicle of the experience of daily life within the pandemic–testimonios, in a word–from Carolina students, past and present, as well as from friends and colleagues in Latin America with personal and professional ties to the Carolina community. Testimonios and other materials on COVID-19 are archived in the Carolina COVID-19 Archive.
