In May 2020, the UNC-Chapel Hill Institute for the Study of the Americas launched an online educational pilot program to support online learning for K-5 students in Spanish speaking families during the COVID-19 pandemic in North Carolina. The “Online K-5 Tutors/Ayudantes Escolares Online” pilot program offers online tutoring to assist local, North Carolina teachers of K-5 students and aims to connect tutors with elementary school students in families with at least one member who is learning English.
The goal of the pilot program is to better support students engaged in online public schooling and homeschooling during the COVID-19 crisis. Tutors are undergraduate and graduate students at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill who speak Spanish and English and receive training and oversight from the staff at the Institute for the Study of the Americas at UNC-Chapel Hill. The pilot program will run through the end of August 2020 to provide summer enrichment and support to students.
