Dr. Juan Álamo is an internationally known performer, composer, and educator. He holds a Bachelor of Music degree from the Puerto Rico Conservatory of Music, and Master of Music and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees from the University of North Texas. Dr. Álamo has presented master classes and recitals at concert halls, jazz clubs, TV and Radio shows, universities as well as percussion and jazz festivals throughout the United States, Central, and South America, and the Caribbean. He is the author of Four Mallet Music for the Modern Marimba Player, A collection of original etudes for beginners and intermediate marimba players and co-author of the jazz vibes book Milt Jackson: Transcribed Solos of the Master. He has also published four recordings; Remembrance (2007), Marimjazzia (2014), Pursuing Freedom (2016) and Ruta Panoramica (2019) - reached the top 50 recordings on the Jazz Week radio chart which are ranked by the highest number of national radio “spins”. Dr. Álamo is currently working on a solo classical marimba recording projected to be released in the spring of 2021 by Summit Records. He is also working on a Salsa recording project for which he wrote the music, lyrics, and arrangements. This project is projected to be released in the fall of 2020. Dr. Álamo is an Associate Professor and the Director of the Percussion Ensemble at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a performing artist and clinician for Yamaha, Meinl percussion and Encore mallets.
