Yucatec Maya Institute

A flyer for the Yucatec Maya InstituteSponsored by the UNC-Duke Consortium, the Yucatec Maya Summer Institute offers beginning, intermediate and advanced level instruction of modern Yucatec Maya. The courses are open to students, faculty, and the public. Modern Yucatec Maya is a language spoken today by people living in the Yucatán Peninsula and northern Belize.

  • First two weeks online/synchronous
  • Final four weeks in-person in the Yucatán

Study Abroad Course (6 credits)

DESCRIPTION: The Yucatec Maya Summer Institute offers an intensive language learning environment. As a hybrid course, the first weeks will be conducted online and then students will travel to the Yucatán to complete the remainder of the course on-site. The course will provide students with a solid linguistic and cultural foundation while working with Yucatan-based instructors and teaching assistants in classes. Students in each level (beginning and intermediate) will engage in a combination of classroom activities, lessons, excursions, and lectures with Yucatec Maya scholars. Funding Opportunities

Eligible students may apply for Summer Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowships through February 10, 2023. Students not eligible for FLAS can inquire about other funding support.
