Principal teaching fields include twentieth-century Latin America, the Caribbean, and Cuba.  The most recent publication is The Structure of Cuban History: Meanings and the Purpose of the Past (Chapel Hill: University of North Carolina Press, 2013). Pérez has served on a number of journal editorial boards, including Inter-American Economic Affairs, Latin American Research Review, The Americas, the Journal of Latin American Studies, and the American Historical Review. He is presently the series editor of “Envisioning Cuba” at the University of North Carolina Press.
