Special events include the program’s inaugural conference, “The United States and Cuba: Rethinking Reengagement” that brought together over 150 participants to examine the state of Cuba-United States relations on the eve of the 2008 U.S. presidential elections; Chaz Mena in a one-man performance, “Charla with José Martí;” a collaboration with Ackland Art Museum featuring a semester-long exhibit of original Cuban art donated by the late David Craven; a month-long film and speaker series on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Cuban revolution, “The Cuban Revolution at 50: Art and Cinema;” and an international conference organized with Queen’s College (Ontario), “Measure of a Revolution: Cuba, 1959-2009.”
