Livro de estreia de Julie Dorrico, Eu sou macuxi e outras histórias traz uma série de contos do universo da literatura indígena. Os textos se inspiram na riqueza cultural do povo macuxi para narrar a descoberta, o encontro e o mergulho na ancestralidade.

Ao longo da narrativa, memórias pessoais da narradora e o imaginário de um povo se cruzam em uma linguagem envolvente e poética.

Eu sou macuxi pode ser lido de muitas formas. É uma celebração dos povos indígenas; de sua vida, seu idioma, seus símbolos e sua história. É o resgate e a afirmação da identidade de uma descendente do povo macuxi. E, além de tudo, pode ser lido como um libelo a favor da luta dos povos indígenas por suas terras, sua memória, seu modo de vida.

Meet the Mentors: Diplomacy Initiative

The Office of the Vice Provost for Global Affairs has launched the Diplomacy Initiative Mentorship program, a Spring 2022 pilot that offers students access to a group of five foreign affairs practitioners from the American College of National Security Leaders.

The program will begin with Meet the Mentors sessions on January 27 and 28. The mentors will introduce themselves and describe their diverse career backgrounds. Introductions will be followed by breakout sessions in which students can chat with each mentor in a small group setting.

The mentors will be available during regularly scheduled virtual office hours throughout the semester for additional one-on-one and small group conversations. Students are encouraged to use office hours to explore different careers in international affairs and diplomacy. Register today at the button below!

Future Directions for Heritage Teaching and Dual Language Immersion in NC

North Carolina is an established national leader in dual-language immersion programs at the K-12 level, yet the state must continue to adapt and grow with the needs of both heritage and non-heritage speakers. Programs for heritage speakers and dual language immersion programs not only respond to different needs among language learners, but they also must use different pedagogical strategies. This panel brings together experts from varying levels of education, diverse parts of the state, and different languages to discuss the state of the field in heritage teaching and dual language immersion in North Carolina, and where these fields are going next.

–Lydia Fergison, Principal at North Academy of World Languages, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools
–Prof. Ana Cecilia Lara, Director of World Languages, Coordinator Spanish Teacher Licensure, and Associate Professor at UNC-Pembroke
–Kimberly Pilling, World Languages Coordinator at Guilford County Schools
–Prof. Yi Zhou, Teaching Professor of Chinese and Coordinator of the Chinese Language Program at UNC-Chapel Hill
-This panel will be moderated by Dr. Ann Marie Gunter, World Languages Consultant at the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction.

Supporting Less-Commonly Taught Language Teaching in North Carolina

Both to serve an increasingly diverse population in North Carolina, and to prepare students for global business and service, less-commonly-taught languages (LCTLs) are important to the future of language teaching in the state. However, supporting these kinds of languages requires creative thinking and different approaches from languages that have more teaching materials available, more trained instructors, and more integration across North Carolina’s schools and universities. This panel brings together experts from varying levels of education, diverse parts of the state, and different languages to discuss challenges and opportunities to support the teaching of LCTLs in North Carolina.

–Prof. Mike Turner, an Arabic instructor at UNC-Wilmington and on the NC Language Exchange
–Dr. Marta McCabe, founder and president at the Czech and Slovak School of North Carolina and program coordinator for English for International Students at Duke University
–Dr. Leslie Baldwin, World Languages Coordinator at Winston-Salem Forsyth County Schools, and adjunct instructor at Wake Forest
–Prof. Jacques Pierre, lecturing fellow in Haitian Creole at Duke University

A Conversation with Sergio Gutiérrez Negrón & Kwazman Vwa

Please join us on November 30 at 2:30 PM EST for a conversation with Sergio Gutiérrez Negrón (Puerto Rico), who will be talking to us about his latest novel, Los días hábiles (Destino, 2020), and all things literature. The event will be in English and held via Zoom.

Sergio Gutiérrez Negrón is the author of three novels and a collection of short stories. Palacio (2011) was a PEN Club de Puerto Rico finalist and Dicen que los dormidos (2014/2015) won the national prize Premio de Novela from the Instituto de Cultura Puertorriqueña. He has published in international venues in either original or translated form, from Argentina to Turkey. He has won the Nuevas Voices prize at the Festival de la Palabra and his work has been recognized as part of Latinoamérica Viva at the Feria Internacional del Libro de Guadalajara in Mexico.

Sergio Gutiérrez Negrón was voted into the Bogotá39, naming him one of the best 39 Latin American writers under 39 by the Hay Festival in 2017.
