As a part of the Nicholas School of the Environment’s Global Week celebration, Duke’s Working Group on Environment in Latin America (WGELA) is co-sponsoring a seminar with Dr. Juan José Miranda about environmental economics in Latin America.

Global Week is a series of speaker events featuring environmental professionals from different parts of the world and capped of with a Global Fest and potluck featuring our various cultures.

Dr. Juan José Miranda is a Senior Environmental Economist at the World Bank, where he started in 2013. He holds a Ph.D. in Economics at Georgia State University with a focus on environmental, behavioral, and developmental economics.

Sustainable Community Development: Perspectives from Mexico

Many North Carolinians celebrate ancestry in the heartland of Mexico in an agricultural region called the Bajío. Speaker Adriana Cortés Jiménez is the director of a grassroots organization in the Bajío state of Guanajuato that has spent decades working to sustainably advance education and economic development in collaboration with local communities, the private sector, and government. Some examples of this work include expanding rural access to secondary education, organizing residents to install community sanitation systems, and building a cultural heritage tourism industry to revitalize towns depopulated by emigration. Adriana Cortés Jiménez will describe what can be accomplished when members of affected communities take the lead in development initiatives. This presentation will be in Spanish with English language interpretation.

Parking is available for $1/hour after 5pm in the parking garage under the FedEx Global Education Center and in other locations on campus. Visitors must use the ParkMobile (zone 4500) app. The FedEx Global Education Center is located near several bus stops serving Chapel Hill and surrounding areas. The closest stops are located on Pittsboro Street at State Employees’ Credit Union and S. Columbia Street at Sitterson Hall/UNC NROTC Naval Armory.

Muchas personas de Carolina del Norte celebran sus orígenes en el corazón de México en una región agricultora llamada el Bajío. La ponente Adriana Cortés Jiménez es la directora de una organización de base en el estado Bajío de Guanajuato, ella ha trabajado por varias décadas para avanzar la educación y el desarrollo económico de forma sostenible en colaboración con comunidades locales, el sector privado y el gobierno. Algunos ejemplos de este trabajo incluyen expandir el acceso rural a la educación secundaria, organizar residentes para instalar sistemas de saneamiento comunitarios y crear una industria de turismo de patrimonio cultural para revitalizar los pueblos que fueron despoblados por la emigración. Adriana Cortés Jiménez describirá lo que se puede lograr cuando los miembros de comunidades afectadas asumen el liderazgo en iniciativas de desarrollo. La presentación será en español con interpretación al inglés.

María Cristina García is the Howard A. Newman Professor of American Studies at Cornell University. Her most recent book, State of Disaster, examines the intersection between climate change-related extreme weather events and migration patterns from Central America. Her book also incorporates the history of U.S. migration policy and its new relationship with “climate refugees”. Her talk will cover the connections between the history, current politics, and extreme weather events in Central America and its impact and relationship to the U.S.

The Institute for the Study of the Americas and the Morehead Planetarium and Science Center present Southern Skies: Stories from Latin America.

Humans have looked at the night sky for thousands of years to understand the world around us. Take a journey in our Dome to see Latin American skies and listen to stories from indigenous Inca and Maya communities. Presentation will be in both Spanish and English languages.

Tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for K-12 and College students. Tickets are available at go.unc.edu/SouthernSkies.
